Having your fire alarm inspected and tested isn’t simply a matter of safety: it’s the law.
In order to meet both federal certification requirements as well as state licensure requirements, fire alarm systems are required to be inspected, tested and maintained in accordance with NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code.
Autech provides testing and inspections that comply with the requirements of NFPA-72. Of course, compliance isn’t the only reason to test and inspect your fire alarm system. In many cases, commercial insurance carriers have inspection requirements in order to maintain coverage of your commercial property. In addition, there are liability considerations should individuals suffer injuries due to fire. Being able to provide documentation of regular fire alarm system inspections could reduce your liability exposure.
The following is provided only as an overview of NFPA-72 requirements for both monitored and unmonitored systems. It is an abbreviated list. Your Autech Technician inspects these and all other NFPA-72 required services:
Monitored Fire Alarm Panels
Weekly
- Visually inspect panel’s trouble signal LED
Quarterly
- Visually inspect all fire sprinkler devices connected to your alarm including water flow switches and valve tamper switches. Test the fire pump monitored points for loss of phase, phase reversal, proper pump function and any other possible issues or problems that might hinder their proper function.
Semiannually
- Test sprinkler waterflow switches
- Test sprinkler valve tamper switches
- Visually inspect lead-acid battery
- Test load voltage of batteries
Annually
- Test and visually inspect panel functionality, LED, fuses and more
- Test panel battery charger
- Conduct a battery discharge test
- Test and visually inspect horns, strobes, chimes, bells and other like systems
- Test and visually inspect smoke detectors
- Test and visually inspect heat detectors
- Test and visually inspect duct smoke detectors
- Test and visually inspect Electromechanical Releasing Devices (Solenoid)
- Test and visually inspect any and all Voice Evacuation Equipment
Other
- Replace sealed lead-acid batteries every 5 years OR as indicated by test results
- Clean smoke detectors as indicated by test results
- Replace smoke & heat detectors after 10 years of service
Unmonitored Fire Alarm Panels
Weekly
- Visually inspect panel lamps, LED’s, fuses, primary power supply, and interface equipment
Quarterly
- Test panel lamps, LED’s, fuses, primary power supply, and interface equipment
- Visually inspect all fire sprinkler devices connected to the alarm, including water flow switches and valve tamper switches
- Test fire pump monitor points for loss of phase, phase reversal, proper pump function and any other possible issues or problems that might hinder their proper function.
Semiannually
- Test sprinkler waterflow switches (by flowing water)
- Test sprinkler valve tamper switches
- Visually inspect lead-acid battery for swelling or loose connections
- Test load voltage of batteries
Annually
- Conduct a battery discharge test (30 minutes)
- Test and visually inspect horns, strobes, chimes, bells and other like systems
- Test and visually inspect smoke detectors
- Test and visually inspect heat detectors
- Test and visually inspect duct smoke detectors
- Test and visually inspect Electromechanical Releasing Devices (Solenoid)
- Test and visually inspect any and all Voice Evacuation Equipment
Other
